10+ yr. Old Dream Comes True!

Northeast Iowa Montessori is now a permanent resident of the downtown Decorah community after thepurchase of the 418 W. Water Street building.

In the winter of 2002, 23 parents created a dream.  That dream was to expand the education options for students in NE Iowa.  They met to discuss philosophies and create a vision for a school. Committees were formed, preschool environments were researched and it was decided that Montessori philosophy should be shared with Decorah families.

Northeast Iowa Montessori opened in 2004. By 2010, NEIM moved to 418 W. Water Street, in downtown Decorah where it currently resides. There the Children’s House is a mixed-age program for children ages 2 1/2 – 6, with an average enrollment of 20 – 25 children. During the three or four-year cycle, a child grows from being the youngest, to being a community leader. Central to their process is the opportunity to discover joy in learning and then to abstract and solidify knowledge through teaching, working, sharing and cooperating with others. After the primary program, a child is ready to move on to the many local options for elementary with established confidence and leadership skills.

NEIM’s 10+ year dream has come to fruition thanks to the generous and continued support of present and past donors, parents, staff, board members, Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission, Howard Alamakee Winneshiek Clayton Partnership for Children Loan, and Decorah Bank and Trust.
